Sunlight drifts through leaves
as if to kiss the dead fox
with a father’s love
The gentle parts have
scattered away clutching words
far beyond my reach
Why am I shown this
He’s panicking, mouth open
But sound doesn’t exist in this place
The gentle parts came back to me today.
These vagabonds never stay for long.
I pulled them down and stuffed my cheeks
I chewed them carefully
I filled my stomach, lungs, heart…
Dead ends still float along beside me
Vague, they crawl up my back
To rest on my shoulder…
They feast upon the last of the fears and swallow them whole into the sun beyond the horizon where they hide in the burning belly until it warms my face in the morning…
Some days I feel as though the scattered and missing pieces have mostly come together and then I’m really here, complete with all my fears, and it’s the closest to whole I can get.
Now the ocean on my back feels calm to the touch
Smoother sailing for them all
But everything still flows down here
Where I shiver beneath them….
