Winter’s last cool night

I want to try something
It’s going to take a while
But I hope some friends will
Come along with me while they can
It won’t be easy
But I have to at least make an attempt
…
Gazing across that river
Watching them on segments of their path
Visible from here
I have to wonder
Do I see them the same?
Call out my name
Shout it across the house to summon me
To the kitchen to cut vegetables with you
Sing it to me at sundown for soothing comfort
As if I myself am the sweet lullaby
…
So many friends
Stunned to be somehow one of them
I find myself on guard
Having learned them to be ephemeral
Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly
Evaporating into the vapid hollow space
Where my love echoes, no longer heard
By any but me

…
Today I think about all the tenderness I felt
That they could just never hold on to
That I couldn’t place their fingers around
Not knowing if it was their failure
Or mine
…
Upside down it waits
Dried bundle of stems and petals hanging
Under harsh incandescence
No longer meant for this place
Blooms given near full year past
…
Night rain on asphalt
Under the warm familiar roof
Friends talk over noise
To paint love on their walls
Down those long hallways
Meandering through their mind
From yesterday to their future
I wish I could
For them, for all their kind warmth
I wish I knew how to do more
I wish I could do everything they need
I’ll have to settle for my presence
And occasional smiles
And when those fall
Yield in acceptance
That nothing lasts forever
January 9 – 13, 2025
I saw something on a TV show today
That sparked something in me
I felt like I recognized an old friend
That I’ve recently been trying to avoid
And I don’t mean that I’ve seen this show before
