For P.

You grasp life with an iron fist
Wrestling it to the ground day by day
In battles among falling petals
Under night skies

Knowing both raging fury and the deepest care
Your mind a pilgrim never still
You’ll never stop reaching for what is just
For as long as you breathe

Your words chosen carefully
Your soft patience with me a boon
Somehow familiar, taken warmly
Behind this stone face

I don’t know when our paths cross next
But when we see each other again,
I’ll gently take both of your hands with each of mine
In your way
